On the occasion of Doctor’s Day, we bring you the inspiring story of a Jaipur-based family that has been devoted to public healthcare for five generations—serving the people of Jaipur for over 120 years.
This legacy of healing and dedication has helped cure lakhs of patients, and the tradition continues even today with the same zeal and compassion.
1st Generation
Ayurvedacharya Purohit Dr. Prabhudayal Vyas Before India’s independence, Dr. Prabhudayal Vyas served the city through the Vyas Aushadhalaya from 1902 to 1940 under British rule. Known as the Raj Vaidya of the Jaipur royal family, he was highly respected by British officials and the royal elite, who frequently sought treatment from him. His legacy still lives on through rare photographs and memories preserved at the clinic.--
2nd Generation
Dr. Brij Mohan Sharma
Son of Dr. Prabhudayal, Dr. Brij Mohan Sharma pursued MBBS in 1924 from King George Medical College, Lucknow. He played a pioneering role in promoting allopathic medicine in Jaipur and Jhunjhunu. Until 1956, he not only provided consistent medical services but also initiated free medical camps, which gained immense appreciation. His contributions were recognized by both British officers and the Jaipur State.
3rd Generation
Dr. Hemant Kumar Sharma
Dr. Brij Mohan’s son, Dr. Hemant Kumar Sharma, was part of the third MBBS batch (1947) at SMS Medical College, Jaipur. He later specialized in MS (Anesthesia)—a rare field at the time—and served for decades, retiring as a Professor at SMS Medical College. He continued his private practice until nearly 15 years before his passing in 2013.
4th Generation
Dr. Vivek Sharma (Pediatrician)
Currently carrying forward the legacy, Dr. Vivek Sharma is a renowned pediatrician not just in Jaipur, but across India. An MBBS graduate from the 1982 batch of SMS Medical College, his work is frequently published in reputed international journals. He’s a regular health columnist and an active health educator. Recognized by multiple state and national institutions, including Rajasthan’s Chief Minister, Dr. Sharma is one of the most respected names in the field today.
5th Generation
Dr. Prasoon Sharma
Dr. Vivek Sharma’s son, Dr. Prasoon Sharma, belongs to the MBBS batch of 2017. He is currently pursuing higher studies and continuing the family’s dedication to the medical profession.
