Jaipur. Rajasthan – The vibrant Diwali Festival at Jawahar Kala Kendra's Shilpgram in Jaipur is showcasing the rich artistry of handmade carpets from Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, often referred to as the "Carpet City of India."
Visitors to the festival can explore a stunning variety of carpets, including pure silk carpets, woolen carpets, silk-on-silk carpets, hand-tufted carpets, and acrylic carpets, all crafted by skilled artisans from Bhadohi.
According to Sahil Shaikh, Director of New Bharat Carpet Foundation based in Ahmedabad, Jaipur residents now have the unique opportunity to own these world-renowned Bhadohi carpets, previously available mostly in major export markets.
“These carpets range in price from ₹1,000 to ₹3 lakh, depending on the design, material, and craftsmanship,” said Shaikh. “We are offering a special Diwali discount for customers this festive season.
The carpets come in a wide range of colors and intricate patterns, adding elegance and warmth to homes during the festive season. The exhibition not only highlights the legacy of Bhadohi’s weaving tradition but also brings India’s cultural richness to the forefront.
Recently, Bhadohi carpets were featured in several international trade fairs, where they received praise for their intricate workmanship and eco-friendly production processes. The district has also been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, further validating the authenticity and heritage of its carpet-making tradition.
Government initiatives and support from organizations like the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) are helping artisans adopt modern techniques while preserving the traditional essence of the craft.
Bhadohi’s carpet industry is a shining example of how local craftsmanship can achieve global acclaim while empowering rural communities and preserving cultural heritage.
